Steve Jobs, the CEO of Apple Computer, delivered this speech at Stanford’s commencement ceremony in June 2005. I’ve watched it a couple times now, with about 6 months in between viewings, and each time it has struck me as worth watching every now and again to keep focused on what matters. I somehow doubt that the graduating class could truly appreciate what Jobs is saying here. (At that age, I know I couldn’t have.) But if you’re a little further down the road, you’ll understand that Jobs (who ironically never graduated from college) points to a simple set of guidelines that can make the difference between living a fascinating and so-so life. Sadly, these principles get lost all too often in the noise, inertia and blur of everyday life.

This is one of my all-time favourite speeches. It’s simple, personal, brief and insightful in a way that is satisfying even after multiple reads. While I’ve read the text many times before, this is the first time I’ve seen the video footage…so thank you for sharing this.
I must say this is quite an inspiring and touching speech. Thank you!
As my partner and I are moving from the uk to the usa, we are experiencing mixed emotions from joy, trepidation to fear. This speech, by a man i already admire, made me weep, echoing words i already know inside, but need to hear, need the reinforcements and the echoing as we move forward.
Thank you so much for this great link to a speech which could be equally called a life sermon.
