The New York PubÂlic Library doesÂn’t need any introÂducÂtion. But it’s new page on iTunes perÂhaps does. It went live yesÂterÂday (access it here), and it gives you access (all of it free, of course) to many great culÂturÂal proÂducÂtions staged by NYC’s foreÂmost library. You’ll find an extenÂsive colÂlecÂtion of “conÂverÂsaÂtions” with some of today’s leadÂing authors — John Updike (tranÂscript), UmberÂto Eco (video), Paul Auster (video), to name a few. (You can get the full author list here.) You’ll also get to rumÂmage around in the library’s large Jazz Oral HisÂtoÂry Project, which feaÂtures interÂviews with an impresÂsive numÂber of imporÂtant jazz figÂures. And then lastÂly — and for betÂter or for worse — you can lisÂten to what is curÂrentÂly the library’s most heavÂiÂly downÂloaded podÂcast — ChristoÂpher Hitchen’s now well known debate with Al SharpÂton.
As a last aside, it’s worth menÂtionÂing that you don’t need an iPod to access many of NYPL’s offerÂings. You can find many of the same mateÂriÂals on the library’s web site. (See here.) And, for more culÂturÂal podÂcasts, please be sure to check out our Ideas & CulÂture PodÂcast ColÂlecÂtion. You’ll find a lot of good conÂtent along the same lines as what the NYPL has to offer.
It’s my new favorite part of iTunes but I had missed that jazz oral hisÂtoÂry secÂtion. AmazÂing.
